T Nile and Twilight Hotel

Last Friday night we went to our first ever folk music concert with two friends, and it was fantastic! We saw two very talented Canadian acts. The show was hosted by the Rogue Folk Club, which I had only recently come across, and the venue was the cosy St James Hall in Kitsilano, Vancouver. It was a very intimate concert with only about 100 people in the audience.



The first group, Twilight Hotel, hail from Winnipeg, Manitoba. They are a couple, and had quite the folk-grunge style going on. Their songs were excellent - some mournful and some really upbeat - and their harmonies were spot on. The guy played acoustic guitar and had amazing finger picking skills. During one song he regularly turned around and crouched down in front of the speakers to create a gentle eerie feedback, which fit right into the mood of the song! The girl played lap steel guitar, piano accordian, vintage electric guitar, and some light percussion... all in a day's work for this awesome duo!











The headline act was a very talented girl by the name of Tamara Nile, or T Nile. She is from Galiano Island, BC - one of the smaller islands off Vancouver Island. She played the banjo, and sometimes the mouth organ (worn around her neck) at the same time, AND she too had some nice guitar finger picking skills! She was accompanied by a guitarist/ back-up singer, a double bass player, and a dreadlocked drummer. T Nile's family and friends were in the audience and it was obvious she was having fun!









At the end, Twilight Hotel and another friend of T Nile's joined her onstage and they all sang a couple of songs together - including one the newcomers didn't even know!









We definitely hope to return for another Rogue Folk Club concert sometime. Highly recommended!
