A hoodoo is a "tall, thin spire of rock that protrudes from the bottom of an arid drainage basin or badland. Hoodoos consist of soft sedimentary rock topped by harder, less easily-eroded stone that protects each column from the elements" (from Wikipedia).
Well, Bryce Canyon is all about hoodoos. And not just a handful of them... hundreds, probably thousands, of them! It is totally awe-inspiring. I'm glad we saw the Alberta ones before Bryce Canyon... because now the memory of how impressed I was by the dozen-or-so Alberta hoodoos is rather laughable!
Like the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon has a number of viewpoints along the road that follows the edge of the Canyon, so we spent about 1.5 hours enjoying the view from the first few viewpoints. There are a few hiking trails allowing people to walk down into the Canyon, but we only walked a little way down at the first viewpoint as we didn't have time to do the 1.3-mile walk I had hoped to do (refer to the previous post to see why!).

A pretty impressive little spot, isn't it?! Some people say they think it's better than the Grand Canyon. We thought Bryce Canyon was absolutely spectacular, but it didn't quite evoke the level of awe inspired by the sheer scale of the Grand Canyon. Although, interestingly, my fear of heights was not triggered in the least at the Grand Canyon - I felt perfectly calm standing at the edge of it (despite having just read about the number of people who have died there). However, I was much more nervous at Bryce Canyon! Weird.
After dinner at a restaurant in the national park, we set off on the 4.5 hour drive to Las Vegas, the last destination of our trip. To be continued...

Love that last photo of you guys. And awesome photos in general! Bryce Canyon is such a cool spot, it brings back so many memories!
Those little chipmunks are just the cutest things ever, but also the most impossible things to take photos of aren't they?! They sit still just long enough to almost frame them in a shot and start to focus, then they dart off almost quicker than you can follow with your eyes, let alone your camera!
Haha, you can tell who is the photographer in each household - Justin didn't bother going to that top viewpoint either, but I dragged myself up there at some unearthly hour in the morning to get some sunrise photos!
