Barbados holiday, Post 3: Speightstown

On Saturday we set off to explore Speightstown, the second largest town in Barbados. It was formally settled around 1630 and was the island's busiest port during the early days of settlement, connecting Barbados with England and thus earning the nickname "Little Bristol". (In fact, Barbados itself is sometimes called "Little England".) Speightstown is on the west coast about 20 kms north of Bridgetown; our accommodation was partway between the two. It was a laidback town with not much happening, but here's what we saw...

We recovered from the heat inside a Chefette store - the island's popular fast food chain. It has everything from chicken burgers to pizza to roti on the menu. Barbados may be the only country in the world where MacDonald's wasn't successful - apparently one started up once, but didn't last! The reason for this, we were told, is that Barbados has the second highest chicken consumption per capita in the world. There still seemed to be a lot of chooks running loose in the towns though! ;)





That night we went back to Wendy's Snack Bar for another round of delicious home-style cooking (grilled fish for Ben; pork chops for me), refreshing fruit smoothies, and very friendly service. It was their last night before closing for two weeks of renovations... so that might explain why, on both our visits, we were told not to read the menu and instead shown/told the only two or three choices available!!
